The Bible onscreen in the new millennium – Q&A with Wickham Clayton

Tuesday, 25 Feb 2020

How would you like someone who has read your book to sum it up in one sentence?

This book uses multiple critical approaches to consider recent biblical adaptations.

What book in your field has inspired you the most?

Hollywood Incoherent: Narration in Seventies Cinema (Todd Berliner 2010)

Did your research take you to any unexpected places?

I engaged with specifically Christian film reviewers, as well as considered the historical links between recent biblical films and those in Classical Hollywood.

What are you working on now?

I have a book coming out about the development of style in the Friday the 13th series, and am starting research on postmodernism and its vocabulary for film studies.

If you could go back and give yourself once piece of advice when starting out on this project, what would it be?

Let your idea be bigger than you think it should be!

If you could have been the author of any book, what would it be and why?

I like seeing the things other people write so I can peer into the way they think ā€“ the things I enjoy, and hate, would not be as interesting as if I wrote them. Though Iā€™d love to write screenplays for films that nobody would watch.

What other genres do you enjoy reading?

I love anything that plays with the boundaries of what their book is supposed to be ā€“ if it is academic I like something that challenges the ideas of research and argument, and if it is fiction, I like to see it takes unusual shapes.

Which authors (academic and not) would you invite to a dinner party?

Stephen King, Douglas Coupland, Kristin Thompson, and Carol J. Clover
