How would you like someone who has read your book to sum it up in one sentence?

Thought-provoking, fascinating, outrageous.

What book in your field has inspired you the most?

Anything by Thomas Laqueur, a brilliant historian.

Did your research take you to any unexpected places?

It is called Sex in the Archives, so yes, as you will discover when you read the book.

Which writing process do you use (computer, longhand, dictate, other)?

Computer, always computer.

Why did you choose to publish with MUP?

Emma Brennan! My book, New York Hustlers, was with MUP and it was such a pleasant process from start to finish that I was keen to work with the team again.

What are you working on now?

A book called Trans America, a short history of transgender in the US. It is for another publisher.

If you could go back and give yourself once piece of advice when starting out on this project, what would it be?

Nothing, really. It was a dream project.

What other genres do you enjoy reading?

Modern fiction, photography, history of art.

Which authors (academic and not) would you invite to a dinner party?

Annie Sprinkle and John Waters: could be an interesting combination, though it would be in danger of becoming a new research project.
