Friday, 19 Jun 2020

1. How would you like someone who has read your book to sum it up in one sentence?

Provides a fascinating and insightful overview of this world-renown director.

2. What book in your field has inspired you the most?

The Film Noir Reader.

3. Did your research take you to any unexpected places?

Yes, microhistoriography, Zyklon B, and Greek junta.

4. Which writing process do you use (computer, longhand, dictate, other)?

Computer mostly.

5. Why did you choose to publish with MUP?

Because of its fine books on French cinema, including mine own with Barton Palmer.

6. What are you working on now?

A book proposal for The Literary Cinema of Richard Brooks, with R. Barton Palmer.

7. If you could have been the author of any book, what would it be and why?

Helter Skelter, because of its realism or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, because of its humour.

8. What other genres do you enjoy reading?

For thirty plus years, I have been reading through the major works by Nobel Laureates of Literature. Each year is a new, surprising genre.

9. Which authors (academic and not) would you invite to a dinner party?

William Faulkner, Harold Pinter, Bob Dylan, Olga Tokarczuk, Kenzaburo Oe, Doris Lessing, Wislawa Szymborska, Octavio Paz, Ivo Andric, Harry Martinson, Patrick Modiano, Gabriel García Márquez, Rudyard Kipling, Pearl Buck, and Theodor Mommsen – it would be a potluck picnic.
