MUP is a proud supporter of the ‘New Connections Fund’, an initiative run by the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS), designed to assist early career researchers (ECRs). We recognise the challenges ECRs face in entering and advancing within academia and are continually seeking new ways to support their vital work. In 2025 we will be offering a book voucher to all recipients of the fund.

In this piece, Dr Eve Benhamou, BAFTSS Executive Committee member in charge of New Connections and Michelle Houston, Senior Commissioning Editor for Literature, Theatre and Film discuss the significance of the new connections fund and the importance of the partnership between BAFTSS and MUP.

‘The ‘New Connections Fund’ is a scheme run by the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS). ‘New Connections’ supports early career researchers and academics on fixed-term contracts, helping them broker a fresh relationship with an academic institution and present their research to a new audience. Since its creation in 2019, the scheme has supported the organisation of 28 events (in person, online and hybrid), including research seminars, roundtables and book launches which reflect a wide range of research interests in theories, philosophies, practices and histories of film, television and screen studies. The fund covers for travel costs and/or other research-related costs. Since 2024, New Connections has also received the support of Manchester University Press. Recipients have welcomed the opportunity to receive a book voucher from this major academic publisher, which helps them develop and expand their research.

‘We’re proud of MUP’s partnership with the New Connections scheme, because as a university press, we value the field-defining research and the many efforts early career researchers contribute to the scholarly world. It allows us the privilege of supporting ECRs at a pivotal time in their careers, to provide transparent information about publishing and to ultimately amplify the important work academics do.’
