“Keep UP!”, the 2021 University Press Week theme, marks the tenth anniversary and celebrates how university presses have evolved over the past decade.

It’s MUP’s turn on the UP Week blog tour today and to celebrate MUP staff are explaining why University Presses (and MUP) matter to them.

‘In Jimmy Carter’s proclamation that launched University Press Week in 1978, he wanted to remind people that university presses have the responsibility of ‘preserving and enlarging the body of human knowledge. In our open society, they have an additional duty – that of making such knowledge available beyond the gates of the campus.’ For me, that’s what MUP, and all university presses, are here to do – support the research and thinking going on at universities, to make it accessible, and to share it with the wider world.’

‘University presses matter because they translate research so that it remains useful for other scholars and crucially also for wider audiences. They do this in a unique and meticulous way, via peer review. This means knowledge is shared within and beyond academia and it can arguably be trusted more from UPs more than other publishers. University press publishing is both traditional in processes, yet at the cutting edge of new knowledge.’

‘The work of university presses means that impressive and insightful research is made available to the public, and without this the ground-breaking work being done by academics in universities across the globe wouldn’t be discovered or discussed on the same scale – their publishing means it’s true potential can be unlocked.’

Becca Parkinson, Marketing Coordinator

‘MUP has always been at the heart of the publishing industry in the North, and has, for many years added to the cultural life of Manchester and surrounding areas.’
